Discovering Belgium
Belgium is a federal state in Western Europe. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts the EU’s headquarters, as well as those of several other major international organizations such as NATO. Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups, the Dutch-speakers, and the French-speakers, plus a small group of German-speakers. Further inland lies a smooth, slowly rising landscape irrigated by numerous waterways. Belgium’s strongly globalized economy and its transportation infrastructure is integrated with the rest of Europe. Contributions to the development of science and technology have appeared throughout the country’s history. The Program for International Student Assessment currently ranks Belgium’s education significantly higher than the average. Health care is of high quality. Belgium has seen the flourishing of major artistic movements and is famous for beer, chocolate, waffles and french fries. Many highly ranked Belgian restaurants can be found in the most influential restaurant guides.
